Most people know where the Industrial Revolution began, but very few – even residents who live there – know that the Lea Valley is the birthplace of the post-industrial and technological revolution. During the past two centuries the Lea Valley was a place of invention and innovation, now sadly forgotten. The Pump House Steam & Transport Museum is based in the Grade II listed Victorian Sewerage Pumping Station where it is preserving rare Marshall C class steam engines. The Museum aims to remind visitors of the Lea Valley’s important industrial heritage and past technological triumphs, many of which are of world significance: the first British electric tram (1882), the first British car (Bremer’s 1894), JAP motorcycle engines (1903), Lotus cars (1953), London’s first steam bus (1829), the flight of the first all-British-built aircraft (AVRO 1909), the first sea-going ironclad warship (Thames Ironworks and Shipping Company 1860) and many more.
